It suddenly dawned on me (while taking a shower), that Thanksgiving, for all of it’s wonderful traits (giving God thanks for all His provisions, being thankful for all of our many friends, and being grateful for our health among other things) also has it’s liabilities! It hit me like a shock wave! How can something so wonderful to Americans be detrimental to anyone? In America Thanksgiving is the largest family holiday in the nation. Everyone travels to be with family and friends, where there is a great big feast of turkey with all the trimmings, not to mention delicious pumpkin pie for desert. Pilgrims, corn and pumpkins decorate the walls, and people of all faiths celebrate. It is a most wonderful event, unless, it is celebrated in a culture that cannot appreciate and understand it. In other countries the American tradition of Thanksgiving is unknown. It’s fine to celebrate in America, where the dominant culture is American. But when Americans visit other nations, and they continue to celebrate their own customs and traditions without learning to celebrate the customs and traditions of those they live amongst, they (unwittingly, unknowingly, unthinkingly, insensibly) tend to promote the superiority of their own culture over others. |
