When I meet people for the first time, I tend to ask questions concerning their interests. I try to find out if we have anything in common like: places I’ve been, people I have met, similar tastes in food, sports or hobbies. We often come up with interesting tales as we get to know each other, looking for common ground to base a future relationship on. We had a lot of fun teaching those in our compartment how to play Uno, which was possible through our mutual interest in playing games. The result was, we were able to give them a Bible. The mother asked: ‘Is this the story of Jesus?’ And when we answered positively, she kissed the book! The excitement grew as we discovered our mutual interests! We are most drawn to people whose interests are the same as ours. The converse is also true: we tend not to spend time with people with whom we do not share common interests. That begs the following questions from the following verse: “For they all seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 2:21) |
